New York City (II) - Sept 11, 2005

September 11, what better way to commemorate this day with a post on my visit to the World Trade Centre Site in 2005.

the gals and I had specifically planned our trip such that it coincide with the special day so we could visit the site on the 4th anniversary of the sept 11 tragedy.

it was heavy-hearted day.... we spent our morning at the World Trade Centre, viewing Ground Zero, reminiscizing its past glory, looking at sad mourners grieving for the dead, listening to the memorial service being held on the other side of the ruins, to the names being read out by the victims' families etc.....

we alighted at the WTC subway station, as soon as we stepped out of the subway station, we approached a large empty walkway, which had probably once been a busy walkway or something..... the sides are enclosed by fences and beyond the fences, is a vast plot of land, where the WTC once stood....

something new's coming on the way...

at one corner was this wall painted in cheerful colours...... some drawings form a mural.... taking a closer, these drawings are actually drawn by the children of some of the men who died in the attacks, people working in there and the firemen as well..... it is a form of art therapy for the kids, for them to express their feelings through drawing... many wrote abt how they remember their fathers, the things they have done together, and how much they're missing them.... (& u gotta read 'em!)

i kinda cried a little while looking at the drawings. they're very very touching..... these innocent little kids lost their loved ones in a cruel terrorist attacks. they're being robbed of the most precious things in their lives. really hope that they will not grow up with hatred in lives and become some kind of terrorists of their own....

there's another shot taken with a bunch of firemen, too bad its with rachel.....

trinity church, a really old church in the vicinity, also a victim of the tragedy

apparently the debris from the crash and collapsing buildings struck certain parts of the church and damaged this very very old tree (can't remember how old though). and to preserve the tree and commemorate the incident, ppl casted the roots and erected it by the church..... looks more like a sculpture of human arteries and other blood vessels...

at night, we walked by the WTC site again

too bad, no pix! blame my cam's lousy night mode. otherwise i could have shown you the 2 towering bright lights that lighted up the NY skyline, in replacement of the 2 buildings.... i think they're only lit up on the anniversary as the following night when i was there, the lights were not there anymore.....

That's it, that's how i spent my Sept 11, 2005!
