United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Image hosting by Photobucket

i'm not someone who's into history. before the visit to this museum, i know no nuts about genocide, purging of the jews, nazi and the big word, Holocaust. i totally like this museum and i'm gonna talk abt it more. since the pix i'm gonna show can be quite upsetting, i've decided to move the continued section to after te end of this post.

More protests.... this time round, something on Cuba and computers.... can't remember what... think is something about US stopping to donate computers to cuba or something....

Union Station

This train station was once the largest building in the states, covering the largest ground space at the time it was built. from a hustle and bustle train station, it has transformed to a shopping and tourism hub it is today, attracting visitors to marvel at the magnificence of its architecture.

outside union station, stood a memorial for christopher columbus, the man who founded the new world. nice place, but this is also a spot where you find many homeless people.... not quite a prety picture overall huh....

from the Union Station, we walked towards the Capitol...... something interesting happened. someone tried to pick me up as we walked towards the Capitol. This white guy, whom i think was a guard there or something rode up to us on a bicycle and said something like i saw you crossing the road and i find you attractive or something and started introducing himself as davidson or some name with 'son' in it. i thought he was talking to one of the girls beside me, cos of course, i do think they're more gorgeous than me (Gera takes the humble-pie!). then later did i realise he's talking to me. he invited us to hang out together and to show us ard (yeah, no thanx, we have our own maps my dear). anyway i was so attached to someone else that i had absolutely zero interest in him so i hasten my steps and ignored him. wanted to tell him that my boyfriend is waiting for me at the Capitol, yah right, what a big lie....

after this encounter, we passed by the supreme court where there were a large group of people protesting against abortion and at the same time, holding a memorial service for a highly honoured judge, who has just passed away....

well, my camera has a lousy night mode, so here's something from the web...

pix courtesy of http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/dc-us-capitol.jpg

most pix are with rachel cos her camera takes better night pix..... anyways, this building is on the centre stage of DC, and its really beautiful.... this is one of those nice buildings that makes me like the otherwise boring state.....

Library of Congress

its a shame we didn't have time for this place. rachel had suggested to come here but we juz din have enuff time to. and when we incidentally passed by the site after seeing the capitol building, i tell ya, i was totally mesmerized by the beauty of the building, at night...

oops! my night mode is not powerful enough, nvm, some pix from the net for your viewing pleasure

this building is huge and its claimed world's largest library with over 130 million items... its of course not the books i was hankering after, but the great interior.... though i never stepped into the building, the pix i saw from other sources made me regret not having visited the place.... if i ever go to washington dc again (chances are slim, i think), its a place i'll definitely visit...

oh btw dun be scared when u see heads popping out of the verandas at night.... oh scary.... well, they're juz head statues of the.... i dunno, maybe the previous US presidents.... haha.....

well, this pretty sums up the end of my DC trip. Honestly, throughout my trip, i was secretly hoping the DC trip will end soon so we can get to NYC asap.... but all in all, DC wasn;t that bad, really. its like the world's capital and where you get to see alot in one place.

Next stop, NYC! yippie!

Continue.... Holocaust Museum

i was pretty excited to be visiting the holocaust museum. there i saw evidents of the tragic historical event, how the jews were being bullied by the nazi, how jewish children were made to clothes sewn with a yellow 6-sided star, sent to concentration camp and extermination camps.

one month after this photo was taken, these 2
brothers were deported to the Majdanek camp. Kovno, Lithuania, February
1944.

did they survive the holocaust?

feel really sorry for the poor children then. an excerpt taken from the holocaust museum website says

'Children were especially vulnerable victims of the Nazis. It is estimated that
over one million
children
were murdered under Nazi rule in Germany and occupied Europe.
In the
ghettos,
many died from lack of food, clothing, and shelter. The Nazis considered many
ghetto children unproductive. They were generally not used for
forced
labor
, which increased their chances for early deportation
to concentration camps and extermination camps. Jewish children were among the first victims when the Germans and their collaborators sought to destroy a Jewish community by shooting the inhabitants or deporting them to an extermination camp.

Following selection at Auschwitz and other camps, the majority of children were sent straight to the gas chambers. A number of children in the camps, especially twins, were used in Nazi medical experiments.'

Family members say goodbye to a child through a fence
at the ghetto's central
prison where children, the sick, and the elderly
were held before deportation to
Chelmno during the "Gehsperre" action. Lodz,
Poland, September
1942.

while some might think genocide is something that took place in the olden days when nazi still prevails but nope, in fact its still taking place in a few countries in the modern days.... eg in Sudan , Rwanda, Chechnya, Congo etc....

all these really set me thinking about all the hardship ppl used to suffer and are suffering now. war is scary. fuck big fat ego, fuck ethnicity/religious superiority, fuck big bully superpowers.

Hey my dear!

so so so so good to hear from you after some time...

yah, the holocaust museum is really interesting, learnt so much thing, kinda saddening though... you see all kinds of harm the people do to the jews, you feel sad for them....

go washington DC & visit the place! its quite near Ohio since you'll be there again this yr.... when will ur contract be over???

NYC is really cool.... got a bit of 'shock' there.... cos we've been in people-sparse places for so long and when we reached NY we were overwhelmed by the massive number of ppl there... of diff skin color etc.... had a great great time there, will be better if i could spend more time there.....
